Chiller installation and replacement
Replacing a chiller is a project, not a swap. It involves sizing, rigging, piping, electrical, controls and a plan for keeping the building cool while the work happens. We help you plan it properly and carry it out.
Planning the replacement
Good replacement projects start well before the old chiller fails completely. Planning ahead gives you time for equipment lead times, budgeting and a scheduled shutdown instead of an emergency one.
- Review of current load, operating history and future building use
- Air-cooled versus water-cooled considerations
- Footprint, weight, rigging path and structural questions
- Electrical service and starter requirements
- Refrigerant choice and regulatory direction
Installation scope
- Removal of existing equipment
- Setting and leveling the new chiller
- Chilled and condenser water piping connections
- Electrical connections and controls integration
- Start-up, commissioning checks and handover documentation
Keeping the building cool during changeover
Where a building can't be without cooling, temporary or rental equipment may be needed during the changeover. We'll discuss whether that applies to your site and what it involves.
Quick guide
What are you planning?
What kind of chiller project is this? Pick the closest match to see what we'd talk through and what a technician would check. This is a guide, not a diagnosis or a quote.
Questions to discuss
- Current chiller age and capacity
- Plant layout and access
- Shutdown window
What a technician would evaluate
- Capacity verification
- Rigging route
- Controls interface
Your selection ("Like-for-like replacement") is added to your request so we have context when we call.
Questions to discuss
- Building load changes
- Air- vs water-cooled
- Space and structural limits
What a technician would evaluate
- Load review
- Tower and pump compatibility
- Electrical supply
Your selection ("Changing capacity or type") is added to your request so we have context when we call.
Questions to discuss
- Timeline
- Condition concerns
- Phasing options
What a technician would evaluate
- Condition assessment
- Options and lead times
- Interim measures
Your selection ("Budget planning") is added to your request so we have context when we call.
How it works
Chilled-water and condenser-water loops
The chiller cools water for the building; on water-cooled plants, condenser water carries heat to the cooling tower. Solid cyan: cooler side; dashed red: warmer side. Illustrative only, not an engineering design.
Point 1 of 4
Evaporator & condenser
Heat exchangers inside the chiller. Fouling or flow problems reduce capacity and trigger alarms.
Diagram described in text
- Evaporator & condenser: Heat exchangers inside the chiller. Fouling or flow problems reduce capacity and trigger alarms.
- Chilled-water loop: Cooled water serves coils across the building and returns warmer.
- Cooling tower (mechanical): Fans, fill and distribution reject heat. Water treatment is a separate specialist responsibility.
- Pumps, valves & controls: Maintain flow and sequence equipment; flow faults are a common trip cause.
Process
How chiller installation work is handled
- 01
Initial conversation
Discuss the building, the current plant and your timeline.
- 02
Site survey
We survey the plant room or roof, access, electrical and controls.
- 03
Written proposal
Equipment options, scope, schedule and any temporary cooling needs.
- 04
Install and commission
Installation, start-up checks and handover to your team.
What to have ready
- Existing chiller details
- Plant drawings
- Budget and timeline constraints
What affects scope and cost
- Capacity and type
- Rigging, crane and structural work
- Electrical and controls
- Lead times
Good to know
- We provide a written scope after site survey
- Engineering design may be required for some projects
We don't publish prices: cost depends on what's found on site and is explained before work starts.

Service areasChiller installation questions
How long does a chiller replacement take?
It depends on equipment lead time, site access and scope. We'll give you a realistic schedule in the proposal.
Should the cooling tower be replaced at the same time?
Not necessarily. We'll assess the tower's condition and compatibility with the new chiller and advise.
Can you work with our existing controls contractor?
Yes. Controls integration is coordinated with whoever manages your building automation.
How long does chiller replacement take?
It depends on equipment lead times, rigging and shutdown windows. We plan the timeline with you after the survey.
Do you remove the old chiller?
Removal is typically part of the project scope, including proper refrigerant recovery.
